Governor Schwarzenegger is proposing cutting the school year by 5-7 days, which equals to a loss of 42 instructional hours. over the course of a child's education, it is equivalent to more than ONE-HALF YEAR of their K-12 education!
In response to Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger’s proposal to cut the school year by up to one week, nine education representatives, ranging from board trustees to superintendent to district counsel, will be participating in a week-long hunger strike at Plaza Park in downtown Oxnard, Calif., Aug. 18-24.
A press conference will be held Aug. 18 at 3 p.m. in Plaza Park. The S.T.A.R.V.E. hunger strike will then officially begin with a solidarity support gathering that is open to the public and will have many elected officials, local leaders and district service providers in attendance. Culminating events will take place Monday, Aug. 24 with an evening vigil that the public is encouraged to attend. Trustees Ana Del Rio-Barba and Denis O’Leary will travel to Sacramento Tuesday, Aug. 25 to hold a press conference, supported by Assemblyman Pedro Nava’s office.
